Ian is currently painting with oils on slate, including recycled slate roof tiles, as well as on canvas. He has also been painting watercolours, particularly landscapes, since 1985.

Pen and ink was Ian's first commercially successful medium and he has illustrated a number of sketchbooks and historical works.
